MV CoilMaster Mark1 coilgun – Featured on Hacked Gadgets
[NL] : www.megavolts.nl [EN] : www.megavolts.nl After some experimenting at school we made a successful working coilgun with speeds up to 85 km/h, now this project is to make it more compact so you will be able to carry it around. Also more power and more speed! The nozzle velocity is still very slow compared to a paintball marker or any other rifle, but the weight of the bullet makes sure it will still give quite a punch. (A paintball @ 300fps still only packs 15Joule) It’s still a hobby project and not perfected in any other way than the looks:) specs: Fully semi-automatic, up to 14 shots. Capable of delivering over 18J kinetic energy, and speeds up to 110km/h! (42 gram projectiles). Its a single stage gun, using a 8800uF(4×2200) capacitor bank with max 400v (704J). Max shot efficiency is 2.8% but reaches almost 4% at lower voltages. Charge time for 300v (12J kinetic energy 396J capacitor bank) is 8 seconds for the mains connection, and when using the internal batteries about 90 seconds. It also has a Digital voltage display. Coil overheat after 14 shots at 300v. Total weight: 5 kilogram. Total spend: ~~ 100 Euro Construction time: ~~40 Hrs Used camera: Exilim EX-FH20 (bad audio good video)

thats awesome.
nice
Very interesting. Do you know what’s the projectile’s kinetic energy? and how much total energy did you need to propel each projectile?
were did you get the thyristor from, i am planning to build one but the easiest way i found is a disposable camera circuit, im guessing the thyristor better
all i have to say…
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ginrai89 I think the point is that this is a demonstration of technology. Obviously if he wanted to build a lethal weapon he would have used engineered rounds, rather than the solid blunt steel slugs seen here.
If the internal battery pack is good for one magazine, why not integrate the batteries into the magazine itself. That way if you don’t have an outlet to plug into, you still have power for every magazine you have. Just a small idea.
congratulations! is a nice gun 5/5
seriously, guy who lives in his mothers basement … good vid and weapon
wait, if it shoots big metal slugs, then what happens to the projectile?
Most beautiful but not the most efficient.
awesome coilgun, actually best i ever seen !
I see that you use quite massive projectiles , wouldn’t nails do better since they are smaller , lighter and sharper . That way you would use the same energy to propel a smaller but much sharper object to higher speeds . Don’t forget that nails could be lethal .
it would still hurt…
cool…but it’s basically as powerful as a bb gun
Nice work for such a short time. The design is interesting, I did one based on a 1940′s design back in 1970 but I used multiple coils. At the time I had trouble synchronizing the coils. Have you thought about trying multiple coils using light controlled Triacs for triggering?
cool concept seen it b4, u need more power thow its posabale
wouldnt a lighter projectile be more damaging?
4:00
I love lamp
Just think, in a few years it will be at the level we see in SCI-Fi movies
That was a nice lamp.
thats cool
a sniper rifle coil gun would be great I think. Little recoil and no noise.
gnas geniaal man !
Do the projectiles have to be that large and heavy i.e. for the magnetic surface area? I’d think that lighter / smaller ammo would travel faster and behave better on impact. A sabot might also work.
