Nintendo reveals 61% profit dive; Wii U on sale by holiday 2012
Nintendo‘s fortunes go from bad to worse, with poor sales of the 3DS and Wii between October and December contributing to a 61-percent drop year-on-year of profits, and the Wii U not expected until the very tail-end of 2012. Nintendo announced 40.9 billion yen profit for the 3 month period, taking place to foretell full-year losses greater than 3 times more than previously expected. The truth is, Nintendo reckons it can be facing a 65 billion yen ($838m) loss in all, considerably higher than its earlier 20bn yen estimates. Nintendo has blamed the slow pickup of the 3DS in the primary 1/2 2011 for far of its woes, the glasses-free 3D handheld proving over-priced within the face of cheaper smartphone gaming options. The corporate responded with a 40-percent price slash, which buoyed sales some, but sales still only amounted to 11.4m units within the months between April and December. Meanwhile, the Wii [...]

Nintendo Must Release the Wii 2 This Year
[adsense] The video game market finds itself in a rather interesting place. Its consoles are still selling exceptionally well, some of the best games released in a long time hit store shelves in 2010, and yet, consumers, pundits, and analysts are wondering when Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will be announcing new consoles. The calls for Sony and Microsoft to offer up new consoles aren’t as loud as those for Nintendo. Last year, Sony released its PlayStation Move peripheral to capitalize on the wildly popular motion-gaming space. Microsoft released the Kinect to do the same. And at least for now, it’s expected that those companies will be spending 2011 doubling down on those technologies with their current consoles. But Nintendo is a different case. Since the Wii’s launch in 2006, the game company’s platform has been performing extremely well. Nintendo says that it has sold over 34 million Wii units in [...]
Nintendo 3DS: sturdier than DS Lite and grease-phobic
[adsense] Nintendo has been talking about the physical design decisions made around the upcoming 3DS, including how the Japanese company made the 3D gaming console easier to open than the DS Lite but still avoided hinge cracking. According to Yui Ehara, from Nintendo’s research and engineering department, the ice-cream sandwich style three layer stack is purposefully tapered so as to give a gamer’s fingers somewhere to grip, unlike the slickly-abutted edges of the DS Lite. Meanwhile, there’s also been work on new materials and coatings to boost durability. For instance, while the tapering aspect helps you open the 3DS, it also increases the likelihood that, if dropped, all the impact force will be on a single point. To counter that, Nintendo used a new glass-fiber resin for the chassis, and rearranged the internal layout of the electronics to minimize damage. The new hinge design apparently took six months of prototyping, [...]
